KIRKLAND, WA - The girls on the Sunnyside junior softball program barely blinked when they were forced to go extra innings at the Junior Softball World Series Sunday. The local Tucson team picked up a 5-3 victory over Greensburg, PA in nine innings. Games are slated for only seven innings of play.
Sunnyside took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Pennsylvania team rallied to tie in the bottom half of the inning. The score remained tied at 1 until the bottom of fifth, when Greensburg took a 2-1 lead. This time Sunnyside would tie the game in the next frame before eventually taking a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning. Sunnyside put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs to secure the 5-3 win.
Yannira Acuna pitched all nine innings for Sunnyside, hurling three strikeouts. She allowed eight hits and just one earned run in the win.
Acuna also led the squad with three hits and one RBI. Narilyn Morales also added an RBI for Sunnyside. Amaya Turner chipped in with a fielder's choice.
Sunnyside faces the team from Italy on Monday at 2pm in their second game of pool play.
