TUCSON - It took an extra game, but the Sunnyside softball program will once again be represented in the Little League World Series. The Sunnyside Juniors knocked off Fontana (Southern California) 13-3 late Friday night at Arthur Pack Park.
Fontana actually won the first championship game, a 5-2 victory, which forced a winner-take-all game two. It was Sunnyside's first loss in the double elimination tournament. It also woke a sleeping giant.
Sunnyside took an early 2-0 lead behind Yanira Acuna and Narilyn Morales RBIs. The lead ballooned from there. In the third inning, Sunnyside scored at will, loading the bases early on. Arlett Arreola nearly hit a grand slam that would have brought the crowd to a frenzy. Still, the Sunnyside faithful was fired up.
The team now heads to the Little League World Series in Kirkland, Washington. Games will be available on the ESPN family of networks, though exact details have yet to be released.
