KIRKLAND, WA - It wasn't the ending Sunnyside softball had hoped for, but it was another great season nonetheless. Sunnyside fell 12-4 against Italy in their final game of the Junior Softball World Series on Saturday. The team unofficially finished 4th in the tournament.
Italy scored in each of the first four innings, including three runs in the second to open up a 6-1 lead. Sunnyside's run came in the second inning on Arlett Arreola's steal of home.
Sunnyside cut the margin to 6-2 in the fifth inning when Yannira Acuna advanced on an error. Italy responded with three runs in the next frame on a sacrifice fly and 2RBI single. They would score three more runs in the top of the seventh to open up a 10 run lead at 12-2. With only three outs remaining, Sunnyside would chip away at the lead. Narilyn Morales cut the deficit to 12-3 before Viviana Orantez added another run off an Acuna line drive to center field. She was tagged out at second trying to advance on the play.
Sunnyside was led by Arreola and Amaya Turner with two hits each. Sunnyside managed eight hits during the game, but only one was for extra bases. Morales hit a triple. The team scored their four runs with no RBIs.
Sunnyside used four pitchers in the loss. Acuna, Angela Sallas, Andrea Escercega and Danesia Carpio combined for 13 walks and eight earned runs. The typically strong staff struck out only two Italy batters.
It was another incredible run for the Sunnyside softball program, which captured a world championship a year ago. The Juniors qualified for the semifinal round in this World Series, making them one of the final four teams in the tournament.
