KIRKLAND, WA - The Sunnyside softball program is headed back to the semifinals. A year after Sunnyside captured the Little League World Series title, a group comprised of many of the same girls are now two wins away from a Junior Softball World Series championship.
Andrea Escarcega had two RBI's, Arlett Arreola and Arely Leon each added one and Sunnyside picked up a 4-2 win over Jeffersonville, Indiana on Thursday. The win eliminated the team from the Central portion of the bracket.
Sunnyside opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Escarcega drew a bases loaded walk. Yannira Acuna scored on the play for a 1-0 lead. Moments later, an Indiana error brought Amaya Turner across home plate for a 2-0 Sunnyside advantage.
The score remained that way until the top of the fourth inning when a sacrafice fly gave Indiana its first run of the game. But Sunnyside responded again in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Leon grounded out to first but Acuna crossed for the third Sunnyside run. The team's final run came on another error which allowed Escarcega to reach first and Turner to score her second run.
Indiana would cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth, but Sunnyside slammed the door in the seventh. A line out, ground out and strike out sealed the victory for the Tucson team.
Sunnyside advances to the semifinals where they will meet the same Greensburg, Pennsylvania team they beat 5-3 in the first game of pool play. Pennsylvania topped Canada 11-1 in their opening round game. Greensburg earned the top seed in Pool B, finishing with a 3-1 record in pool play. The lone loss came at the hands of Sunnyside.
The two teams will square off beginning at 4:45pm on Friday. Saturday's championship game will be broadcast live on ESPN NEWS beginning at 2pm.
