TUCSON - Tucson has experienced many tragedies over the past year, many which directly affected our children. Death by suicide has become a small epidemic for teens in this community.
The feedback after one teen suicide was "Nobody cares". At that moment, it became very clear that as a community, we needed to be more proactive in reaching out to our youth, before they fell into crisis. They need to see that we do care and are dedicated to their positive growth and wellness.
In response, the SE AZ Suicide Prevention Coalition is planning a week of activities to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Week. Suicide Prevention Awareness Week is September 4 - September 10. During this week, we plan on having daily events focused on awareness, prevention and intervention. In conjunction with this week we will also be creating youth-driven presentations to educate the community about teen suicide.
Below is a summary of the activities we are working on:
MONDAY Moment of Silence- 9/5
An opportunity for radio stations to play a moment of silence to honor Teen Suicide Prevention Week. This will entail a PSA of 15s followed by 30s silence followed by 15s of what community and National resources are available.
TUESDAY- 9/6 - Integrative Healing groups around Tucson have donated this evening to provide hands on healing to families and children such as; EFT (Therapeutic tapping), Reiki, Deeksha, and Healing Touch, to name a few...
WEDNESDAY - 9/7 - On this evening, NAMI Parent and Teacher's as Allies will host an informal informational/discussion group providing culturally sensitive education to parents and teachers. All families from the Tucson and surrounding community are welcome. This event will be hosted by CPSA at their building on Dodge and Grant.
THURSDAY- 9/8 - We will be creating a culturally sensitive, standardized curriculum to present to schools and Emergency Departments. On this day we will host 3 presentations at UMC 12PM, 5:30 PM & 7:30PM in the Kiwi room.
FRIDAY- 9/9 - Wishes in the Wind Facebook Frenzy! This will be a youth driven facebook campaign to bring awareness to the topic of Suicide. Given the multiple tragedies in this past year, we envision this will serve as a memorial as well. The hope is to provide an on-line forum for youth to talk about these issues and find their natural peer supports.
SATURDAY- 9/10 - 2nd Saturdays/Festival of Light. We will have a table at Hotel Congress during the 2nd Saturday event and sponsor the night at Dry River to reach a teen audience (music, art projects and opportunities for teens to share their feelings in using art, poetry, music and discussion). We want to use this opportunity to celebrate our children, survivors and families affected by suicide in a fun-filled, strength based manner!
MONDAY - 9/12 - Providence Meet Me at Maynards
Hundreds of people turn out for the for the 4-mile tour through the historic neighborhoods of downtown and, back at Maynards, enjoy live music, free lemonade and snacks, $2 drafts and $2 off entrees.
Or, get a discount at one of many other participating restaurants and bars, including the Cup Cafe ($2 of "large plates"), El Charro ($5 off entree), Xoom Juice ($1 off a smoothie) and O'Malley's (20 percent off an entire dinner tab). This event is not a sponsored event, but will have a suicide awareness/prevention focus.
