Suicidal man shot, killed by deputies

TUCSON - An active-duty soldier is dead Wednesday after a tragic standoff with a Pima County regional SWAT unit.

The man, distraught over his father's suicide on Oct. 31, returned home for his father's funeral when he became distraught and suicidal himself, deputies said.

An officer shot and killed the man when he came out pointing an AR-15 assault rifle.

The man's father, Marty Maiden Sr., was involved with a similar SWAT standoff that lasted 5 hours at the same home on Oct. 31. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

A call was made Wednesday about an attempted suicide in the 7500 block of South Woodbury Grove Drive.

Pima County regional SWAT responded to the scene and evacuated nearby homes as a safety precaution.
