TUCSON - A local effort to improve animal welfare has been awarded a grant by the Petfinder Foundation. This grant will help underwrite a comprehensive study of local pet homelessness by the University of Arizona's Eller School of Management.
The $1,250 grant was awarded to the Pima Alliance for Animal Welfare (PAAW), which was formed in 2012 to come up with solutions to the staggering number of companion animals ending up at the Pima Animal Care Center, Humane Society of Southern Arizona and various rescue organizations.
A steering committee, which includes representatives from both local shelters, several rescue groups, breeders, funders and veterinarians, will work with the Eller team to determine baseline statistics against which success can be measured.
"The PAAW project is shining an accurate spotlight on the plight of the thousands of homeless pets who enter Pima County shelters each year," said Lisa Robinson, Executive Director of the Petfinder Foundation. "It is promoting collaboration amongst the many local groups who work tirelessly to help them."
The Petfinder Foundation's grant will support a communitywide effort that ultimately will result in more adoptions, aggressive spay/neuter efforts, and post-adoption support.
"If we know how many homeless animals are flowing through and between the community's key agencies and where they are coming from based on ZIP code, we can target our efforts and know if they are making a difference," said Barbara Brown, Vice President of Program Services and Community Initiatives at the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, which is part of the collaboration and serves as fiscal agent. "The students enrolled in the Eller program can get some hands-on, practical experience and PAAW can get vital information to share with all of the partners, resulting in a better quality of life and permanent homes for our companion animals."
