TUCSON - Students at Wright Elementary School are putting together holiday cards to send to troops serving Southern Arizona and local veterans.
Congressman Ron Barber's office will be sending the cards later this the week.
Alongside the students are Gold Star Mothers, women who have lost a son or daughter in combat. Sheron Jones' son was killed in Iraq in 2007. Jones said she has spoken with troops who have received the cards, and "a lot of them don't get to hear from their family as much as they want to, so to get a Christmas card from any of these kids puts a smile on their face."
The principal at Wright Elementary School is Maria Marin; she's also a Gold Star Mother. Her son was killed in 2010. Marin said she is impressed with the messages written by her students. "I just think, wow, somebody is going to read this letter and see the heart of a child and that may very well be what gets them up and powers them up, and they take one more step in their sacrifice and service for us," Marin said.
Sunday Posey is a 5th-grader at Wright and said she was happy to decorate a card. "I also told him or here that they have a good holiday and I thanked them for doing what they do and making sure I could live in a safe country," she said.
