TUCSON - A controversial skit performed Friday at TUSD headquarters has raised an outcry in our community.
Those who performed in the skit said they were completely misunderstood by some local media, including News 4.
So in an effort to be fair, we sat down with them to let them explain their true intentions.
"I felt misrepresented and I felt like my voice wasn't heard, and I only use my voice to represent my community," said Kim Dominguez-Liva.
As they sat and watched, emotions of anger and sadness ran high for three students who participated in Friday's skit, or what they like to call Guerilla Teatro.
The students said they weren't just misrepresented, but their message to save ethnic studies was misunderstood.
"The stripping of our education and the stripping of our culture is a death to us. So that's what we wanted to put forth," said Luis Valdez.
The students say this message wasn't about Tom Horne or to demonstrate any acts of violence, it was about saving a culture.
"Tom Horne was taking their books, taking their education so without that it was like he was stealing their culture," said Jesus Vejar.
Students said next time they'll make sure to make their message understood, in order to continue making a difference in their community.
"Anything that we give to community we give in only in hopes of making ethnic studies live longer," said Liva.
We would like to get your feedback on this skit.
