TUCSON - The Tucson Streetcar is moving toward completion.
Testing of the lines and rail began Tuesday night. It's the first step as the city transitions from construction to operation.
Right now construction is 95 percent complete.
Testing will begin around 10:30 Tuesday night, traffic will be impacted through 5:30am Thursday morning.
Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians will not be allowed to cross the rail during the work. Police will be directing traffic.
The test route will begin near 4th Avenue and 9th Street and progress along the roadways ending at Helen Street and Warren Avenue.
The plan is to do electrical testing along portions of the line.
Construction Manager Joe Chase is thrilled with how the project is coming to fruition, but also stress caution.
"Basically from now through the rest of the Streetcar's life, treat the lines like they're hot. They're going to be testing all the time, there's going to be power, you won't know when, just treat it like it's a hot line the entire time," says Chase.
United Streetcar based in Oregon is the company building Tucson's Modern Streetcar.
The colors coordinate with Sun Tran.
Relieved to have construction nearly complete, some Tucsonans don't buy into the Streetcar's hype.
Tucsonan Mario Olivas says, "I don't approve of the street car, I think it was a waste of money."
Others are looking forward to catching a ride.
Downtown patron Tracey Till says, "Definitely, if it's more convenient than the busses, I would definitely enjoy it."
"I would say most definitely, it's going to relieve all the traffic around here, rush hour is a nightmare around here," says Abram Delecki who spends time on 4th Avenue.
The city is expecting the first Streetcar to arrive by month's end, with testing to follow.
