(KPNX)Less than a week ago, Elijah the pit bull didn't have a name or a family, having been shot and left for dead on a Phoenix mountainside.
Now, he has both.
Andi Davis found the 2-year-old dog on Friday during her routine hike near 20th Street and Dunlap.
Davis gave the pit bull water and carried the 47-pound dog down a steep, half-mile trail.
"When my mom found our new dog on the mountain, my heart broke at the first sight of him," her 10-year-old daughter wrote in a letter to the Arizona Humane Society. "He was torn up. Everywhere."
The Davis family took the pit bull, who they later named Elijah, to the Arizona Humane Society where Second Chance Animal Hospital veterinarians began examining the dog.
X-rays revealed that an open wound on the left side of Elijah's chest was from a gunshot. Bullet fragments were found in his shoulder, and a bullet was lodged in the center of his neck.
