LOS ANGELES (AP) - The California Highway Patrol has shut down the Grapevine section of Interstate 5, where icy conditions, freezing rain and dropping temperatures have already caused several fender-benders on the steep roads.
Officer J.C. Lesnet says snowfall may reach as low as 2,000 feet in the area Friday, creating treacherous driving conditions on the main highway between Southern and Central California.
Stormy weather moving through the region has brought heavy snow to the mountains and damaging lightning strikes.
A lightning strike late Friday morning in Riverside County started a small fire on the roof of an Applebee's restaurant in the Eastvale area.
Elsewhere, a possible lightning strike on an electrical substation knocked out power to about 29,000 Southern California Edison customers in Huntington Park and surrounding cities.
