PHOENIX (AP) - State Treasurer Dean Martin - a potential Republican primary election challenger to Gov. Jan Brewer - is critical of her decision to release nonviolent illegal immigrants from state prisons early so they can be deported.
Brewer blamed the federal government for state costs resulting from illegal immigration when she said Dec. 21 she was using a state law authorizing inmate releases up to 90 days early. She said it's a way to cut state expenses in response to the budget deficit.
Martin said Wednesday he's against letting prisoners go free before their terms are up and that it's not an appropriate way to balance the budget.
Martin says he may enter the governor's race. Brewer has already announced she's running for a four-year term.
