St. Demetrios Church hopes concert will make up for lost revenue

TUCSON- The fire only burned seven minutes inside a midtown church but the damage is proving to be long term. St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church has cancelled their annual Greek Fest because of the damage.

"Every icon, everything in this church was purchased by someone in honor of a family member or someone that has passed so there are a lot of emotions with losing these kinds of items," said Fr. Earl Cantos.

Just like the day of the fire this church community has come together to create a different source of income. A concert will be held at Fox Theater with some talented musicians.

"Well, I am very excited about the concert. My brother Bill Cantos and his wife Mary Falconi are going to be our headliners. My brother is an internationally known musician."

It's been a slow process. Liturgy has been held at a neighboring parish while St. Demetrios works through repairs.

"We should be moving into our hall as soon as our AC units are fixed. So, maybe the end of September. The church is a different story."

The church will either be completely redone or they may move to another location. Either way Greek Fest has been cancelled and a concert is taking its place.

Bill Cantos has toured or recorded with the likes of Elton John, Phil Collins and Barry Manilow just to name a few. The revenue won't bring nearly as much as the 18,000 people at Greek Fest brings but, it's something and right now every little bit helps.

The Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington Band will also perform. The concert is on Saturday, September 28th.

Doors open at 6pm. The concert begins at 7pm. Tickets start at $20. VIP packages are available for $65. The VIP includes an artist meet and greet, cocktails, appetizers, VIP seating and valet parking.
