TUCSON - Alex Komechak isn't your average pet owner. The Southern Arizona resident owns 2 camels named Nessie and Baby.
Nessie weighs in around 800 pounds, her counterpart is about a thousand.
Recently, Alex and Nessie took the web by storm after a YouTube video of them running went viral.
According to Alex it was all a complete surprise.
"I uploaded the video at 9:30 that night and I went to bed early. I woke up to all of these e-mails from news people and I went to my YouTube page and saw the view count and went 'Oh my God.'"
Her first thought?
"Look how dorky I'm running!"
However, that aside, Alex is happy the video caught on because she wants to help educate others about camels. She currently writes the blog www.camelsandfriends.com.
While she loves owning the animals, she also wants to spread awareness that they are not house pets. They require a lot of time, money, work and responsibility.
"They have a high infant mortality rate. They have to be bottle raised exactly right. The goat's milk they are raised on is very expensive and you have to do it every single day, multiple times a day, and that goes for a year."
