PHOENIX (AP) - Republican legislative leaders plan to postpone a controversial cost-cutting move to close the state Juvenile Corrections Department and shift its custody and treatment responsibilities to counties.
Officials familiar with the revision now being prepared for consideration by the full Legislature told The Associated Press that the department would be extended for a year beyond its current sunset on July 1. Also, a commission will be formed to study transitioning its responsibilities to counties.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because some lawmakers hadn't been briefed on the proposed change to the plan.
County officials have protested that it's unfair for the state to offload expenses onto counties.
