PHOENIX (AP) - The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved construction of a $2 billion solar generating plant near Gila Bend.
The Solana Generating Station planned by Abengoa Solar Inc. of Spain will provide 280 megawatts of electricity to Arizona Public Service. That's enough electricity to power 70,000 homes.
It was approved Wednesday by county officials after the project got a $1.4 billion federal loan guarantee through the Obama administration's stimulus program.
