SIERRA VISTA - A suspect who tried twice to flee from a traffic stop was fatally shot by a Sierra Vista Police officer Sunday.
The incident began when a Sierra Vista Police officer attempted to pull over the driver just after 11 p.m. near Golden Acres and State Route 92.
The suspect initally stopped but sped away from the officer, Sierra Vista Police spokesperson Sgt. Mertie Stompro said in a release. After a short chase, the officer was able to get the suspect to pull over again near Mahonia Place.
This time, the suspect accelerated towards the officer, Sgt. Stompro said. The officer fired several shots at the driver which killed him.
The passenger in the car fled on foot and has not been located since, Stompro said.
"The officer involved was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy regarding officer involved shootings, while a joint investigation is being conducted with the Sierra Vista Police Department, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation," Commander Adam Thrasher said.
