Sierra Vista Police issue debt collection scam alert

Police in Sierra Vista are warning about scammers who have been calling residents, and threatening arrest for a delinquent debt.

Detectives say scammers will call saying their company has taken over your debt. The scammer will then demand payment, or threaten an arrest warrant if payment is not made immediately.

Police say in Arizona, no arrest warrant will be issued for private debt. So, if anyone is threatening you with arrest, they are scamming you, so you should not give them your information or payment.

Police say to avoid being scammed, you should not send a check, cash or money order, wire money, or give out account information to anyone that you did not contact. Police say instead, you should get the company name, address and phone number of the collection agency, then check with the Better Business Bureau to verify the business is legitimate.

Police add you should contact the business that claims you owe them money, and verify there is actually a debt. Police also say you should always ask for a written verification of the debt.
