TUCSON - An 82-year-old Florida woman is getting her "Twilight Wish" to ride a big-rig, and today she stopped by Tucson during her cross-country trek.
Margarette Kirsch, 82, wanted to be a Vegas showgirl since the first time she went there - she says the roads weren't even paved when she was there.
"The showgirls were flat-out gorgeous," she said, in a thick Southern drawl. "I could just see me walkin' around with that great big headdress and costume on. I called my mother and she said, ‘You're not gonna do that. I didn't work my whole life so you could go out there and show your (butt) off.'"
So when she read an article about the Twilight Wish Foundation, she called and hoped they could her realize her lifelong dream. The foundation grants wishes to adults 68 years and older who don't have the resources to make their wishes come true.
For two years, they tried to get Margarette on a Vegas stage to strut her stuff - but the Vegas unions wouldn't allow it. Eventually, she had the Twilight Wish Foundation help her with another wish: "Goin' across the country on an 18-wheeler."
And on June 6, Margarette hit the road from Pennsylvania, and the Twilight Wish Foundation granted its 1,590th wish.
She recently stopped in Tucson and visited the local chapter of the Twilight Wish Foundation - she'll carry on the road, eventually winding up back at her hometown of Merritt Island, Florida.
