PHOENIX - Two scandals that were never made public led to the firing of five Arizona Air National Guard officers, including the head of the state's air guard.
The Arizona Republic reports the scandals included fraudulent expense filings by more than two dozen Tucson-based officers and harassment of the state's only female fighter pilot.
Those events led Brig. Gen. Michael Colangelo to fire four of his top commanders.
Colangelo himself was subsequently accused of abusing his authority for dismissing the officers and was fired last month by the head of the state guard.
The two clashed about the results of an Air Force inspector general's report.
Thursday was Colangelo's last day under a removal order issued by Maj. Gen. Hugo Salazar. He says he did nothing wrong.
