Saying goodbye to a fallen Arizona hero

PHOENIX (AP) - Thousands of mourners packed a Peoria church Monday for the funeral of Phoenix Police Detective John Hobbs, who was killed in a shootout with a wanted suspect last week. Dozens of people later lined sections of streets and freeway overpasses for the 10-mile procession to a graveside service in Phoenix. He leaves behind a wife and three young children.

Hobbs was shot March 3 and died hours later of his wounds at a Phoenix hospital.

The 21-year veteran was a member of the Phoenix Police Department's Major Offenders Bureau tasked with tracking down and arresting violent offenders and fugitives.

The photo provided by Phoenix Police shows a lone riderless horse with the boots turned backward in the stirrups. It signifies the fallen warrior and the fact that he will never ride into battle again.
