TUCSON - It was the end of an era today at an iconic Tucson eatery that served as a staple for generations of University of Arizona students.
The crew at Sausage Deli dedicated the final sandwiches made at the shop's original location to founder Steve Kleinsmith who opened the place on First Avenue near Grant Road back in the 70s. Kleinsmith sold the place a decade ago to manager Chris Fanelli's family.
"Today was more of an emotional day," said Fanelli. "We had a lot of customers that were regulars and also some that I have not seen in 10 years but have probably been here 20, 30 years ago."
Employees will spend the weekend moving much of the stock and a few mementos from the deli's trademark cramped quarters to a much more spacious building just a few dozen yards east on Grant Road. Demolition crews will raze the old building to make way for a Walgreen's store.
The new-look Sausage Deli is scheduled to open on Monday.
