One of the area's best high school football teams and a certain threat to compete for a state championship is now in a battle to save their season.
Santa Rita will have a hearing Friday with the Arizona Interscholastic Association to determine whether or not they used an ineligible player.
The issue at hand was the failure of the player's family to file specific paperwork after the player in question switched school districts.
If the ruling Friday goes against Santa Rita, it's possible that the 8-1 Eagles will be forced to forfeit seven wins which would push them out of playoff contention.
If they lose the hearing, Santa Rita plans to appeal the decision.
The Eagles play rival Palo Verde for the region title on Friday night.
Calls to the AIA have not been returned.
