TUCSON - It has been almost five months since the Safeway shootings, and today, for the first time since January 8, the store's president and CEO was in Tucson.
Most of us will never forget January 8 - especially those who witnessed it first-hand, like the employees of the Safeway store on Ina and Oracle. Today, they were honored by the company.
Steve Burd, president and CEO of Safeway, Incorporated, came to Tucson to meet and thank the employees who acted so bravely that day. Store managers scheduled all the employees who worked that tragic day, so Burd could meet and thank them all individually.
Burd says he is proud of the way his managers and employees responded during the crisis.
"People go through a lot, I could've been there, what would have happened and so I think making them know that we appreciate them and everything they do, and particularly having gone through an event most of us will never experience in a lifetime," Burd says.
He says just about every employee working at the store in January is still working there today. They're a tight-knit group, he says, and they've become even closer since that tragic Saturday.
