TUCSON - A group of 700 Tucson first-graders and their teachers will be rewarded next week for their participation in a drowning prevention program hosting by Safe Kids Tucson.
The 5th Annual Water Safety is for YOU! Event will take place at the Edith Ball Aquatic Center on April 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. Students will visit stations that re-enforce the drowning prevention messages they've learned in the classroom.
Safe Kids Tucson and community partners have been working together to raise awareness about drowning prevention, including the simple and consistent "ABCs of Water Safety" message: Adult supervision, Barriers around the pool, and swim and CPR Classes.
Arizona ranks second in the nation for child drownings, and last year, there were 18 water incidents in Pima County, including seven fatal drownings - five of which involved children.
News 4 Tucson's Kristi's Kids is taking part in the effort to prevent drowning incidents this year with the Lifesaver program.
