Over Labor Day weekend, hurricane Jimena brought gale force winds and torrential rain to San Carlos, Mexico. Immediately afterward, Tucson Rotary Club members rallied to help repair the damage.
Tucsonan Mike Huhn, of Desert Divers, worked with Tucson Rotary to quickly collect and deliver emergency supplies.
Huhn says they collected drinking water, hygiene items such as shampoo, toothbrushes, and other items.
Huhn also says, "We've got toys for the children. Most of the kids have lost all of their toys."
Resorts quickly reopened after the storm. But many workers lost their homes.
Jim Lubinski, a Rotary Club member, says, "Through Rotary International we were able to get 48 shelter boxes sent down there. A shelter box basically provides shelter and living space, water, tools, kitchen utensils for up to 10 people."
Rotary members also sent money. Drew Vactor, a Tucson Club member, says, "We ended up helping the San Carlos Rotary Club feed up to 10,000 people at a time. They estimate they're spending up to $12,000 a week doing it. And we've been able to replenish at least a week's worth of that."
Lubinski says, "The Rotary Club of Tucson has been involved in various projects in the San Carlos area for about 19 years now. We've been providing clean water and built a library in the community. A lot of our members have residences or spend time down there on a continual basis. So we have a real bond with the community."
Huhn says, "We've given them the leg up they need to be able to rebuild."
