TUCSON- The Reid Park Zoo's newest edition now shares it's birthday with Tucson.
Semba, a 24-year-old African elephant, gave birth to its third calf at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday. Although both mother and daughter are healthy, zookeepers are keeping a watchful eye.
Zoo keepers and volunteers said Semba showed signs of labor around 10:35 p.m. last night by walking backwards, extending her tail and laying down. Just 20 minutes later, the little girl was delivered. She has not been weighed or named yet.
This is the first elephant to be born at the Reid Park Zoo.
