Red Cross: 10,000 learn CPR to honor Rep. Giffords

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The American Red Cross says 10,000 people nationwide have gotten free training in first aid and CPR in honor of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

The Red Cross held "Save-a-Life" trainings at more than 100 locations from Alaska to Puerto Rico on Saturday.

About 1,700 got the training in the southern Arizona cities and towns of Green Valley, Nogales, Sierra Vista, Douglas and Tucson, where the Jan. 8 mass shooting occurred.

Six were killed and 13, including Giffords, were wounded.

First aid has been credited with saving Giffords' life after she was shot in the head at a congressional event.

The Red Cross says the lesson from the shooting is simple: People can make their communities safer by learning what to do in an emergency.
