Recall bid against Ariz. sheriff faces tough odds

PHOENIX (AP) - The campaign to oust the notoriously polarizing sheriff for metropolitan Phoenix faces long odds as the lawman's critics are running short on money and relying on volunteers rather than paid professionals to round up support for a recall.

Critics argue Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio should be booted because his office has failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crimes cases and faces racial profiling allegations in two pending lawsuits over its trademark immigration patrols.

Organizers have gathered 170,000 of the 335,000 signatures needed by May 30 to force a recall election.

Arpaio backers aren't taking the recall effort lightly. They've filed a lawsuit asking a judge to end the recall, while the sheriff's campaign committee is circulating a non-binding petition that opposes the effort.
