TUCSON - In an unannounced surprise, Rep. Gabrille Giffords read the pledge of allegiance to the thousands gathered on the University of Arizona mall for the candlelight vigil.

Tucson mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Secretary of State Ken Bennett welcomed Giffords and her husband, Captain Mark Kelly, to the stage, at the beginning of the "Remembering January 8" candlelight vigil, held to memorialize the tragic day one year ago.

Giffords enthusiastically read the pledge of allegiance alongside her husband, and was met with thunderous applause and cheers from the thousands gathered there.
