Rash of car break-ins at new Oro Valley gym

TUCSON - Fitness buffs, in Oro Valley, beware. Thieves are targeting cars. at the new LA Fitness.

Over the last 30 days, LA Fitness, at Oracle and Hardy roads has had four cars broken into.

The first one, was on Thursday afternoon, September 12th. $640 worth of items were stolen out of a car.

Then, on Friday evening, September 27th, items worth $240 were taken from a vehicle. On Tuesday afternoon, October 1st, a laptop and other electronic items were stolen worth $2,749 and $200 in damages to the car. And later that same day, $800 worth of items were snatched from the LA Fitness parking lot

Oro Valley Police Department Public Information Officer, Kara Riley, believes the thieves are targeting specific people, "We're finding that it is happening in the afternoon hours, between 4 and 6, is when it's occurring so everybody's coming from work trying to rush in, get the work out in to get home", said Riley, "I think it happens to be a clientele of opportunity."

LA Fitness has put out fliers advising members not to leave valuables in their cars. A manager at the facility declined to comment, but Oro Valley Police confirm LA Fitness is cooperating in the investigation.

Brian Lorenz, a members of the club, says he will now be taking extra precautions when he comes to work out, "I won't leave my wallet or anything and make sure I get a locker now in the gym."

Kara Riley says it is important that regardless if you are in a gym or any public parking lot, never leave valuable items in your car and be sure to lock it up, especially with the holidays approaching.
