TUCSON - According to the Pima Animal Care Center, 6 skunks and 2 javelinas have come up positive for rabies right here in Pima County. So pet owners are being urged to be careful, especially during the spring and summer.
"If these animals are out in the day time their not supposed to be you need to be very cautious," said Jeff Carver.
Officials say these rabid creatures just aren't in rural areas anymore, they could be right in your own backyard.
"We have so many different neighborhoods that have alley ways and washes that run through town and the wildlife gets in those and use those to get right into town," said Carver.
And some pet owners said they noticed more wild animals making a visit to her home, so they're doing their best to keep their animals safe.
According to veterinarians, rabies vaccinations can save your pets life.
"If your animal has been in contact with a wild animal the best thing is to get them to your vet right away because we do do post vaccine exposure and if the animal has not been vaccinated we can give antibodies against rabies," said Dr. Jennifer Klaus.
