TUCSON - The News 4 Investigators wants to pass on an important Valentine's Day message from the Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona.
"Be a Valentine not a victim." The BBB warns of three different types of scams they see this time of year, playing on peoples most basic emotions of affection.
Online dating is more popular than ever. However the person you think may be your soul mate might be after your money. Once the trust is established, Romeo will suddenly come up with a financial emergency. Most of the time it's a medical reason or they need help cashing a check. Family members are strongly encouraged to watch out for middle aged and elder relatives who are more often the targets of these heartbreaking scams.
Buying flowers online may wilt the dollars in your wallet. Use only true and trusted companies and avoid random offers from spam like emails. Also, a new scam works this way: You've order flowers for someone special. A few days later you get what looks like a legit email asking to reenter your credit card number to finalize the purchase. Scammers are behind thousands of emails like this in an attempt to get your money.
E-Cards are another way scammers go about phishing schemes. Be careful about opening E-Cards which direct you to other websites and prompt you to download programs. Those programs may contain a virus or spyware to grab your financial information.
