TUCSON - Proposed tuition increases are on the minds of college students across Arizona this week, not to mention many of their parents.
This Wednesday, the board of regents will take public input before taking a final vote.
Students are in unison, wanting a tuition freeze.
Samir Mohandes, a UA sophmore says, "it's tough because tuition is going up but financial aide isn't and that disparity is hurting a lot of people."
Another student Nisha Talanki says, "I'm hoping tuition won't go up, I mean living expenses are already a hassle."
To offset state budget cuts some $180 million since 2008 the UA will propose a three percent tuition increase for out-of-state and graduate students.
President of the student government ASUA, James Allen wants that changed to zero.
"We haven't had a true zero dollar tuition increase since 1992, so it's been 20 years," says Allen.
The regents will vote on final tuition rates Thursday April 5th.
Already, board members say they're encouraged by the proposals presented by all three universities, providing News 4 Tucson with this statement:
"Sound fiscal planning and greater operating efficiencies on the part of the universities, as well as a commitment from Governor Brewer to begin reinvesting in higher education as evidenced by her fiscal year 2013 executive budget proposal, have resulted in zero to very modest proposed increases by the university presidents," said Katie Paquet, spokesperson for the Arizona Board of Regents.
Still, most students feel that even the smallest increase is too much including Allen, "There are students who are no longer here because they couldn't afford to be here to even have this conversation."
Wednesday's hearing goes from 5 to 7 p.m. at the student union. It's open to the public.
Those who can't attend can send their comments via email to the arizona board of regents at tuition@azregents.edu.
