TUCSON - The Project Linus Tucson Chapter is once again hard at work stitching up all types of handmade blankets, just in time to hand them out this holiday season to children who need it the most.
"Some of these children have absolutely nothing. Some come from families but they are scared to death there in the hospital, so our idea is, a blanket provides a hug to a child in need," Project Coordinator Rene Lissise said.
Lissise said as of November, close to 5,000 blankets have been distributed to babies and children up to the age of 18, but with these blankets in such high demand, more volunteers and donations of fabric are needed.
"We average about 400 to 450 blankets per month and that's not enough right now; we're in bad economic times and there are a lot of children not getting blankets that deserve them," Lissise said.
Katie Wright was one of those children who was surprised with her own blanket three years ago, when she was in the hospital after her surgery didn't go so well.
"It was a very comforting thing because I didn't think that my sickness or my surgery would go bad. Just a day later I was in the hospital and because it was with me for the hard time, I wanted it with me and now I have it whenever I'm sick," Wright said.
