James Palka's home is under the microscope today. Contractors are there finding leaks & making sure each room has equal pressure. Why does this matter? These contractors are finding big savings on Palka's energy bill.
Pima County's Jesus Duran said contractors find, "about a 15 percent savings through the homeowner's utility bills". Palka said, "I can tell you the electric bill's $10 less one full cycle since they did the work".
Now, more people can cut their energy bills, as part of the government's Weatherization Assistance Program. This program has money to burn, according to Pima County. "Now we have a $1.7 million budget. Before we had $170,000 budget", said Duran.
You need to fill out an application to see if you qualify. Once you do, Pima County sends out contractors to search for savings. "All the leaks you don't even know about. You wouldn't even know there are leaks in your light canisters, but there are, and they show that and they prove that", said Palka.
Duran said, "We will be able to possibly do 3 or 4 times more homes in this 3 year period than we would've normally been able to do".
Its programs like this benefiting homeowners and the planet. Palka said, "Take advantage of this. Saving money's one thing but being efficient is being practical".
