Possible changes coming to the "Broadway Project"

TUCSON - Some big changes could be coming to a stretch of Broadway Boulevard.

It's called the "Broadway Project." The plan is to expand Broadway from Euclid to Country Club. It's part of the Regional Transportation Authority but there's a citizen's task force involved and now the project could be changing.

Jason Parsons has owned and operated Top Hat Formal Wear for 16 years. To do that he's leased a building on Broadway. Business has been strong, but now he's worried that expanding Broadway to six lanes with bus lanes and a median means he'll lose space.

Parsons said, "Initially I think it's going to be good for business. I don't want to stand in the way of growth but Broadway at some point needs to be expanded."

The city spent millions to buy some of the nearby properties. Councilman Kozachik says they can make the expansion using the land the city already owns.

Kozachik said, "That means to me that we can use some of those properties that are not historic in nature, knock them down, make bus pull outs, bike lanes. Get the buses and the bikes out of the corridor."

That means existing businesses and homes won't be touched. "We're talking about spending up to $71 million to do something we don't need to do, that we don't want to do," said Kozachik.

The hope is business and homes in that particular corridor won't be affected after all. The matter goes before the Council on December 4th.
