WICKENBURG, Ariz. (AP) - A Salvadoran man faces several charges after pulling out a grenade during a traffic stop in a Wickenburg parking lot.
Authorities say 37-year-old Jose Santos Cruz was stopped Saturday for driving erratically on U.S. 60. He pulled into a McDonald's parking lot and got out of the vehicle. As he turned his back to the officer, he reached into his waistband and pulled out a hand grenade.
The officer subdued Cruz and the grenade fell to the ground.
The area was cordoned off, but the grenade turned out to be inert.
A check of the vehicle showed it and the license plate had been stolen in the Phoenix area.
Cruz faces charges that include driving while under the influence and aggravated assault on a police officer.
