FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - Pinal County officials are cutting Sheriff Paul Babeu's budget in an attempt to make up for lost revenue.
The Casa Grande Dispatch reported (http://bit.ly/V1vhUE) that the Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 Wednesday to slash $5 million from adult detention operations at the county jail.
Officials say the move comes in response to a loss of a contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
County Manager Greg Stanley says the budget initially included $11 million in expected revenue from a deal to house ICE prisoners in county facilities.
However, officials say ICE never responded to requests to negotiate since the previous contract expired July 24.
The county sent a notice of termination as a result.
Babeu says the board's actions could mean compromising care and custody of inmates.
