TUCSON - Pima Community College has announced that Roderick Gary has agreed to be the Head Men's Basketball Coach.
Mr. Gary served as an assistant basketball coach at PCC in 1989-1990 and 1998-1999. From 1991-1997, he was an assistant boys' coach at Sahuaro High School under coach Dick McConnell
He played basketball at Cochise College in 1976-77 under Coach Dave Strack Jr. and has been an Arizona Interscholastic Association-certified referee in Southern Arizona.
"I appreciate the chance to contribute to one of the up-and-coming programs in the nation, and to make sure the young men succeed in the classroom as well as on the court," Mr. Gary says.
The Aztecs finished seventh in the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Tournament in March. They were 20-16 in 2009-10.
"Rick loves the game and understands the importance of upholding the College's tradition of academic achievement by its student-athletes," Executive Director of Athletics Edgar Soto says.
Mr. Gary is currently a full-time staff member at the College and will continue in his role as program manager of PCC's Information Center and the College's outreach team.
Mr. Gary received a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication from Northern Arizona University in 1980.
Pima has also announced that Jason Hisey has agreed to be the Head Baseball Coach.
Mr. Hisey served as PCC's pitching coach and assistant coach from 2006-2008, helping the Aztecs win 105 games and reach the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference playoffs in 2006 and 2007.
From 1995-2005, Mr. Hisey was the head baseball coach at Catalina Foothills High School. He guided the Falcons to three state championship games, eight regional titles, and a 256-78 win-loss record.
In 2006, Mr. Hisey coached USA Baseball's 18-and-under team to a silver medal at the World Junior Championships in Cuba.
Mr. Hisey pitched for the University of Arizona from 1987-91. He went on to pitch in the minor leagues from 1991-93 in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization.
Mr. Hisey has a master's degree in Sports Administration from the University of Arizona and a bachelor's degree from UA in Exercise Sport Science.
"Jason's record speaks for itself. He has been successful at every level. And he knows the College and appreciates the high scholastic standards we hold our student-athletes to," Executive Director of Athletics Edgar Soto says.
