TUCSON- You may be looking to add a new member to the family this holiday season, but there are some things you should know before you adopt.
As usual, the Pima County animal shelter is packed with furry friends from across the county.
"We generally have over 150 adoptable dogs and usually about 50 to 75 cats at any given time for adoption," said animal care advocate Justin Gallick.
This time of year many of them leave the shelter as a gift for someone special. But, it's important to answer some basic questions before you commit.
"Are they looking for an animal that needs to be exercised? How much time do they have to spend with a pet? The cost involved in getting a pet. Just the routine vet care, food, all of that," said Gallick.
That's why this year, Pima County has the perfect gift allowing the potential owner to find the perfect match. Adoptions are half-off right now. Fifty bucks can bring a new friend home.
The shelter also warns pet owners about the hazards of Christmas decorations. Animals are often allergic to poinsettias and can choke on things like tinsel and ornaments.
