TUCSON - El Dia de San Juan Committee hosted the 15th Annual Dia de San Juan Fiesta on Monday, June 25, at the Mercado San Agustin.
The Fiesta celebrates St. John the Baptist's Day. Local folklore dictates he is the one who brings the rain and so this day often marks the beginning of the monsoon season in the Old Pueblo.
Longtime West Side resident, Josefina Lizárraga, a small business owner and community volunteer, was honored this year as La Reina de La Fiesta.
Mayor Jonathan Rothschild was present and made a proclamation naming June 24 "El Dia de San Juan". This was the first time an elected official made an appearance and made a statement for the event.
The celebration featured a procession displaying an antique statue of San Juan Bautista and prayers from various cultures were offered.
Following the procession the fiesta went into full swing with mariachi and tejano bands, a piñata for the children, and horseriding.
