KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - A veteran Associated Press photographer has been killed and an AP reporter wounded Friday in Afghanistan.
Photographer Anja Niedringhaus was killed instantly when an Afghan policeman walked up to the car she and reporter Kathy Gannon were in and opened fire. Gannon was wounded and is described as stable and talking to medical personnel.
An AP television freelancer nearby says they were traveling in a convoy of election workers preparing for Saturday's nationwide elections when a unit commander walked up to the car, yelled "Allahu Akbar," which means "God is Great" and opened fire on them in the back seat with his AK-47.
He then surrendered to the other police and was arrested.
