Phoenix Police Department hires 11 new officers

PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix Police Department has hired 11 new police officers.

Wednesday's move was the first hiring of police officers since a hiring freeze began in 2008 due to budget cuts.

The officers came out of the Phoenix Police Reserves.

City Councilman Daniel Valenzuela says he wants to see Phoenix continue hiring new police officers in the months ahead.

He says the goal is to bring the police department's staffing levels "back to where it needs to be."

Valenzuela says public safety should be Phoenix's top priority.
