WASHINGTON - Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon told an audience in Washington on Friday that his goal is to get Arizona's new law cracking down on illegal immigration "revoked as soon as possible."

Appearing during a panel discussion held at the liberal think tank Center for American Progress, Gordon called the new law "criminal," "wrong" and "racist."

Gordon was joined by New Haven Mayor John DeStefano and Arlington, (Va.) County board member Walter Tejada.

Gordon is hoping President Barack Obama will step in with an executive order to protect citizens' civil rights, order the Justice Department to sue or order more Border Patrol agents or the National Guard to the state to protect the border.

Gordon says the potential for violence warrants a suit by the Justice Department.
