Phoenix firefighter dies while climbing Camelback mountain

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty Phoenix firefighter has died after he fell while rappelling down Camelback Mountain.

Fire Capt. Mark Vanacore says the firefighter and two teenage boys were about 200 feet up the Echo Canyon Trail around 7 a.m. when they fell approximately 30 feet.

Vanacore says the firefighter was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

One boy was listed in extremely critical condition. The other suffered minor injuries.

Vanacore says it appears all three were in the middle of a rappelling or rock climbing maneuver when the accident occurred.

Authorities say the trail will remain closed while Phoenix police investigate.

Vanacore did not release the identity of the firefighter or the two teens.
