Pet blood donors needed

TUCSON - The 4th of July weekend is one of the busiest times for local veterinarians. Animals often run from the sound of fireworks and get hurt. A local clinic is hoping you can help them re-stock their blood bank so they're prepared.

Southern AZ Veterinary Specialty & Emergency is the only animal blood bank in Tucson that supplies other clinics. Your pet needs an exam to determine if he or she is a good candidate to be a donor.

Donor Requirements:

YOUR PET CAN BE A HERO TOO IF THEY ARE...

-Between the ages of 1-7

-Over 50 lbs for dogs

-Over 10 lbs for cats

-Never been pregnant

-Spayed/Neutered

-Current on all vaccinations

-Of good overall temperament

-Indoor cats preferred

Blood Needed For:

-Trauma, like being hit by a car

-Coyote attacks

-Javelina attacks

-Immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), very common in certain breeds

-Snake bite treatment

-Surgeries
