Parents accused of murdering toddler & hiding him in toy chest plea 'not guilty'

TUCSON - The parents accused of starving their toddler to death and hiding his body in a toy chest entered ‘not guilty' pleas in Pima County Superior Court Tuesday afternoon.

Raquel and Martin Barreras were arrested earlier this month after a Grand Jury indicted them both on 1st degree murder, child abuse, and concealment of a body charges.

Raquel and Martin attended the arraignment via video conference. The two remain in the Pima County Jail, accused in abuse and murder of their 3-year-old child Roman Barreras.

Only skeletal remains were found inside a toy chest earlier this month at a home on the south side that the Barreras family had previously rented.

Court documents show the couple's other kids had told investigators that the parents had starved the toddler to death.

Extended family members were in attendance at court but did not want to speak to the media, citing a gag order that Juvenile Justice Court had placed on the case.

Raquel Barreras remains in the county jail on a $500,000 bond while her Martin Barreras remains behind bars on a $50,000 bond.
