The following is a statement from the Reid Park Zoo's Facebook page:
• Reid Park Zoo regrets to announce that "Pacino," a male African Spot-Necked Otter, died yesterday. He was reported unconscious in his pool and keepers rushed him to the Zoo's Health Center for care. However, he did not respond to treatment.
Our veterinary and pathologist team conducted a preliminary necropsy which revealed a tumor on his adrenal gland as well as some physical changes to his heart muscle. However, final test results are needed to determine how these findings might have contributed to his death. Although he was an older animal, he showed no symptoms of chronic health conditions. He was approximately 14 years old and has lived in Tucson since 2001.
The Zoo staff would like to thank the guests who were present yesterday morning for their concern and support during a difficult time. "Pacino" the otter will be missed by staff and visitors alike.
